CIRQUE ALFONSE

Cirque Alfonse is a young circus company from Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez in the province of Quebec, established in 2005. Its founding members have all worked with some of the most renowned “nouveau cirque” companies around the world. This young company is comprised of a team of professional acrobats graduated from the École nationale de cirque de Montréal, as well as a professional dancer, an ex-skiing champion and three talented and versatile musicians. This brave and creative group of young performers is blazing a creative path that no one has yet dared to explore, blending the arts and techniques of the circus and infusing them with the most picturesque facets of traditional Quebec folklore.

The story starts in 2005 when the Cirque Alfonse project is created and first takes shape. In 2006, the company launches its first show La Brunante. The show is of short duration but it serves as a very successful first experience. It will later become the foundation for Timber ! After La Brunante, the members of the company each pursue their own solo careers with Montreal’s Les 7 doigts de la main, the Cirque du Soleil, Cirkus Cirkör of Sweden, the Cirque Starlight of Switzerland and the Montreal dance company Bouge de là, before starting work in 2010 on their second creative project, a show called Timber! that they premiered at Montréal Complètement Cirque in July 2012.  And in July 2014 BARBU : Electro-trad Cabaret also premiered at Montréal Complètement Cirque. This production has since  been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe for one month, at London’s Wondergound at the Southbank Centre in London England and toured twice to Australia including engagements at the Perth Fringe and the Adelaide Fringe and a one-month sold-out run at the Sydney Opera House. TABARNAK is the company’s fourth production and premiered in July 2017 at Montréal Complètement Cirque.

Cirque Alfonse is represented by John Lambert & Assoc. in the USA, Latin-America and Asia-Pacific Region.

TOURING NOW: ANIMAL

An unusual take on farm life…

ANIMAL

” Cirque Alfonse is back with quite an unusual take on farm life… and on the animals in particular!”

ANIMAL: A Farm Story takes us on a journey of discovery through a series of slightly surreal farm fables served up with a touch of irreverence, impressive virtuosity and the company’s familiar comic touch. In this re-invented agricultural world, the farm is turned upside down and the barn turned inside out!

A gentleman farmer has surrounded himself with some familiar but slightly outlandish creatures: the chickens have teeth, the ducks are slightly menacing and the cows are kicking up a fuss. In this “farm fantasy”, the imagination conjures up stories from childhood, rural life proves to be both energetic and poetic and clichés are joyfully turned on their head.

Yet again, the clan of family and friends that make up Cirque Alfonse has favoured its multidisciplinary approach where circus, song, dance and theatre all come together, driven by original live music … an irresistible mix of trad and soul that the troupe calls ‘agricultural funk!

A production for young and old alike, ANIMAL is the farm gone haywire!

BARBU Electro Trad Cabaret delves into the origins of the circus in Montreal at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Imagine a fairground, where spectators are left spellbound by remarkable performances and outrageous feats, simple curiosities and unexpected eccentricities. Political correctness has no place in the mayhem of this show. In scene after scene where music, video, circus and general craziness collide, each performer wows the audience with a showcase of spectacular skills. May the best beard win! Backed by a frenetic electro-trad band, the Cirque Alfonse clan strays dangerously close to the edge in this exuberant circus rave.

Since its inception, Cirque Alfonse has been exploring traditional iconic Quebec images, integrating them into a truly innovative form of contemporary acrobatics. In the Lanaudière region of Quebec, the Carabinier-Lépine family and their close friends joined forces in 2005, and the following year they created La Brunante. The show became the foundation for Timber! which the company premiered in 2010. This highly original production has been an undeniable success with more than 250 performances in 13 countries to date. The Cirque Alfonse clan created its third show in 2014: BARBU Electro Trad Cabaret, an off-the-wall, rollicking extravaganza. Timber! explored life in lumberjack camps; BARBU takes its inspiration from the carnivals andsideshows of bygone days. It’s history with a contemporary twist.

Turning the church pews upside down…

Cirque Alfonse electrifies once again with this demanding and highly original Tabarnak. The music contributes enormously to the success of this very festive Tabarnak. LA PRESSE, Montreal”

TABARNAK

” TABARNAK comes across as a big family fête, debunking a few sacred myths along the way.”

TOURING INTERNATIONALLY FROM EUROPE TO AUSTRALIA TO LATIN AMERICA

At the core of the Cirque Alfonse is the family, Carabinier-Lepine, who hail from the village of St-Alphonse-de-Rodriguez in rural Quebec.

Inspired by their village church that was once the central gathering place of the small Quebec community where the family grew up, the Cirque Alfonse has created their newest production, TABARNAK.

Having the feel of something of a rock-musical,  this is an invitation to come together as well as a fiesta of circus, music and reaching for the sky.. .all in the inimitable style of Cirque Alfonse.  From the basement to the nave, from the altar to the spire, Cirque Alfonse, inspired by their roots , gives a fresh take on this community gathering place!

With their signature infectious merriment, Cirque Alfonse has created a lively musical circus where the organ takes a riff on the traditional and the acrobatics turn everything on its head…and everybody all comes together for a rollicking good time.

TIMBER – Cirque De Lumberjack

Beards, muscles, plaid lumberjack shirts and long-johns abound, and staying true to their roots, the axes, saws and knives used in the show are genuine and sharpened.

TIMBER!

RETIRED PRODUCTION

Look out for flying axes and death-defying leaps with razor-sharp saws as Cirque Alfonse takes to the stage. All done with a rollicking sense of humor, the cast of Timber is there for a wood sawing, axe throwing, lumberjack tossing, good time.

You can almost smell the fresh-cut pine logs and the sweat of lumberjacks as you watch them jiving to a traditional folk soundtrack. The young circus troupe hails from a small town called Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez and they have clearly drawn upon their country roots to find inspiration and energy for this unique creative project. Timber !, is clearly off the beaten track. The show’s creators designed unusual acrobatic apparatus inspired directly from the forestry resources available on their real-life family farm. The experience feels and smells authentic. The artists perform incredible feats of aerial acrobatics that are directly inspired by the natural raw materials of the forest and the equipment used on the farm. The atmosphere is hyper-festive. The talented acrobats and musicians create a colourful, energetic scene where we can witness epic feats of agility and strength, inspired by the exploits of the first North-American lumberjacks, loggers and farmers.

The action is set in a lumber-camp,where there is merriment and mischief on an outhouse and the company juggle and chop vegetables at high speed for the family stew pot. Beards, muscles, checked lumberjack shirts and long-johns abound, and staying true to their roots, the axes, saws and knives used in the show are genuine and sharpened and the cast don’t wear steel toe capped boots or any protection other than gloves. Taking authenticity to new heights, when Cirque Alfonse rehearsed in their unheated Québecois barn, they sawed wood as a warm-up to their rehearsals.

scarily thrilling’ ‘the performers’ unpretentious pleasure in their own prowess is infectious’ ‘It’s a show that seems to imply Monty Python were right in believing all lumberjacks are in a permanent state of delirious happiness’.

– Lynn Gardner for The Guardian (London UK)

‘The company ups the ante imperceptively and dramatically, progressing from fairly simple balancing acts on tree stumps to tightrope walking on a long, thin length of wood held up by two of the performers to juggling with a lot of axes. Before long they’re well into a plethora of other death-defying feats.’

– Time Out (London UK) 4 stars

In short, Timber! Is a beautiful and crazy family history, well worth a visit.

– Vanessa Guimond, TVA Nouvelles

But beyond the performances, family spirit remains the brand of Alfonse’s trade and we emerge from this show with a smile and a heart warmed by this solid core of friendship, love and loyalty. We thank them for inviting us to their party .

– Josèe Lapointe, The Press

These bearded men are versatile — they rollerskate, juggle, leap, lift and catch each other, pole dance and prance, often several of these at the same time.

– Craig McKeough, The West Australian

Barbu both celebrates and subverts traditional circus performance and creates something unique and highly original.
